SAVOURING SNOW POLO IN ST. MORITZ

January 18, 2022

The 37th Snow Polo World Cup is right around the corner, taking place from 28–31 January 2022. The combination of a majestic mountainside landscape, the frozen, snow-covered lake of St. Moritz, powerful ponies and the renowned charm of St. Moritz make this one of the world’s most prestigious and exciting sporting events.

As an official sponsor of the Snow Polo World Cup, attended by some 15,000 spectators from around the world, Flexjet has a few words of wisdom for those attending for the first time.

NO MASKS REQUIRED BUT VACCINATION & TESTING RULES APPLY

While spectators will not need to wear face masks at the parties or the VIP tent, everyone attending  the outdoor spaces will be required to show proof of full vaccination against or recovery from COVID-19 via a valid Swiss or European COVID pass and a photo ID at the entrance. For indoor spaces, the same full vaccination or recovery proof is required in addition to a valid negative PCR or rapid antigen test (unless the latest vaccination or recovery was less than 4 months prior to the event).

BABY, IT’S COLD OUT HERE

The birthplace of winter tourism and winter sports, St. Moritz has hosted the winter Olympic Games twice.

January is the coldest month of the year here, with temperatures ranging from a low of -17.0°C (1.4°F) to a high of -2.0°C (28.4°F). And there will be plenty of snow, so bundle up. Choose boots with warm lining and hats that cover your ears.

PACK THE SUNNIES

While it’s undoubtedly chilly, this jaw-dropping alpine location enjoys more than 100 hours of sunshine in January. Pair that with the clear skies and the 1,856 metre-altitude, and you will want to protect yourself from the sun. Bring and wear your best sunglasses and use sunblock and lip balm – early and often.

THESE BOOTS WERE MADE FOR WALKING

Not only do you want your shoes to keep your toes toasty, but you’ll want comfortable shoes. With so much spectacular action and landscape to enjoy, you’ll be spending a lot of time on your feet and walking.

ALTITUDE GOT YOU DOWN?

Adjusting to the altitude could be challenging at first for some – or not a problem for others.

Some tips: Avoid tobacco and alcohol for two days before you arrive at the higher elevation. If you can spend a day at a slightly lower elevation before you arrive at St. Moritz, that will help accelerate your adjustment when you arrive.

Once there, drink lots of water – 4 litres a day if you can – and feast on your carbs (now you have an excuse).

APRES POLO, ST MORITZ STYLE

Bring your casual club attire because there are plenty of exclusive clubs to enjoy into the small hours. You might get an invitation to the Dracula Club, a legendary destination located in the glamorous five-star Kulm Hotel, St. Moritz but surely you will be able to sample a few cocktails at Devil’s Place, the world’s largest whisky bar at Hotel Waldhaus am See.
